Vielleicht war die Ausweitung des Streiks der mexikanischen Minenarbeiter der Auslöser: Der Silberpreis ist zum ersten Mal seit über 20 Jahren wieder über die Marke von 10 US-Dollar gestiegen. Allein heute, am 2. März 2006, stieg der Preis um mehr als 4%. Chart-Techniker rechnen nach der Überwindung dieses Widerstands mit schnell weiter steigenden Kursen, vor allem wenn sich die Einrichtung eines Exchange Trade Fund (ETF) für Silber konkretisiert. Der bisherige Höchststand bei Silber wurde mit über 50 Dollar im Jahre 1979 erreicht, was damals vor allem durch eine Spekulation der Brüder Hunt ausgelöst worden war. Inflations- und kaufkraftbereinigt wären das heutzutage weitaus mehr als 100 Dollar. Gründe für einen langfristigen Anstieg gibt es reichlich: Die zunehmende Bedeutung von Silber als Schmuck und Wertanlage in Indien, China und den Golfstaaten, die physische Knappheit von Silber, die schleichende Kaufkraftentwertung der Weltleitwährungen sowie eine mögliche erneute monetäre Rolle von Edelmetallen, abgesehen von den historisch gesehen immer noch extrem niedrigen Preisen für Rohstoffe allgemein sowie vom Umstand, dass Short-Verkäufer auf Silber sich bei steigenden Preisen eindecken müssen, was die Kursspirale nur noch beschleunigen dürfte.
